Ship delivering two huge container cranes to PhilaPort’s Packer Avenue to transit up the Delaware River Wednesday morning

WHAT:

The arrival of PhilaPort’s second set of super post-Panamax cranes as they transit up the Delaware River to the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT). *The ship will transit up river overnight.


WHEN:

March 26-March 27

  • Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 P.M. Start of transit from Big Stone Anchorage
  • Wednesday, March 27 at 12:01 A.M. First bridge passage @ Delaware Memorial Bridge
  • Wednesday, March 27 at 3:45 A.M. Expected arrival at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal

* The ship carrying the cranes – the Zhen Hua 25 – will be docked alongside the terminal for approximately one week. Set to depart Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

Super post-Panamax Crane Stats:

  • Cranes height [boom up]: 391 ft.
  • APEX of crane [height; boom down]: 252 ft.
  • 32 stories high [boom up]
  • 21 stories high [boom down]
  • Weight of each crane: 3,368,659 lbs. (1,528 metric tons)

 Miscellaneous Information:

  • Cost per crane: $12 million
  • Cranes are large enough to load and discharge the newest generation of ULCVs* 10,000-18,000 containers per ship.
  • The new PhilaPort cranes, with booms up, will be 13 ft. taller than the Walt Whitman Bridge**.
  • 30 feet higher overall than current PhilaPort cranes.
  • The cranes will be joined by a third crane destined for the Port of Wilmington (NC)
