PhilaPort Welcomes Metsä Back to Philadelphia
Philadelphia, PA (October 8, 2026) – Metsä is back in Philadelphia, bringing significant cargo volume and steady business to the city’s waterfront.
The major Finnish paper company’s return is expected to bring approximately 260,000 metric tons of cargo annually through Penn Warehousing at PhilaPort’s Forest Products Center, supporting work for dockworkers, warehouse employees, truck drivers and related businesses throughout the region.
“Forest products are one of PhilaPort’s core strengths, and we’re excited to welcome a major company like Metsä back to Philadelphia,” said PhilaPort CEO Rich Lazer. “We look forward to working with our partners at Metsä and Penn Warehousing to make this service a success for both the Port and the region.”
The service is projected to support 560 jobs, $34.7 million in labor income and $54.6 million in economic output across direct, indirect and induced effects. It is also expected to generate $9.6 million in tax revenue, including approximately $2.7 million in local and state taxes.
The service also strengthens Philadelphia’s role as a gateway for forest products, supplying manufacturers throughout the Northeast and Midwest.
PhilaPort celebrated Metsä’s return on October 7 with a presentation recognizing the renewed partnership. Wagenborg Shipping provides the service, with sailings every three weeks.
