First Chilean Grapes Arrive at PhilaPort Under New Systems Approach
Philadelphia, December 19, 2024 — The Port of Philadelphia has received its first shipment of Chilean grapes under the innovative Systems Approach, marking a significant milestone in international trade. The grapes arrived at PhilaPort’s Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on Wednesday, December 18th, highlighting the effectiveness of a new method that reduces the need for fumigation.
Under this Systems Approach, 35% of Chilean grapes can be exported to the U.S. without fumigation, thanks to comprehensive mitigation measures implemented at the source. This development not only ensures higher-quality fruit but also enhances the competitiveness of Chilean grapes in the U.S. market.

The new approach also provides environmental benefits by eliminating the need for fumigation, reducing chemical use in the supply chain.
In 2023, over 200,000 tons of grapes from Chile arrived through the Greater Philadelphia marine terminals, valued at $5.2 million. This new method is expected to streamline the process and further strengthen the trade relationship between Chile and the U.S.
This is a game-changer for the grape industry, and PhilaPort is proud to support this critical development in global commerce.
