PhilaPort Handles Livestock Exports
Philadelphia, May 6, 2024 — PhilaPort CEO Jeff Theobald is pleased to announce the successful export of cattle via the Tioga Marine Terminal. 1,640 pregnant heifers were loaded in Philadelphia on April 3, and have now arrived safely in Turkey. They will help improve the quality of dairy herds in Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Theobald noted, “Pennsylvania is one of the leading agricultural states in the USA; the Commonwealth’s agriculture sector has a $132 billion economic impact. Particularly in livestock quality, we are among the best in the world. PhilaPort is proud to support exports from this important industry.”
The heifers were consolidated in Central Pennsylvania before their trip to PhilaPort, where they boarded a specialized cow carrier ship for the journey to the Mediterranean Sea.
Managing the loading operations at the Tioga Marine Terminal, Delaware River Stevedores (DRS) President Andy Sentyz underscored the terminal’s experienced staff, facilities, and ample space for agriculture exports. Sentyz further highlighted DRS’s track record in livestock handling, with the next export loading already scheduled later this year.
